The NuLeaf 7-Visit Program

Comprehensive plant care can be complicated. We’ve developed a 7 step program that covers the bases for monitoring your ornamentals, protecting them from ailments, and building the soil so they thrive.

Our 5 step process includes:

  • Application 1: We spray your flora with a horticultural oil spray that suffocates overwintering insects and their eggs, giving us a jump on insect control.
  • Application 2-5: In the spring, we will fertilize them to provide key nutrients for optimal growth. We will also apply systemic insect control and fungicide to plants susceptible to specific fungal diseases. On this visit, our technicians monitor your plants and apply fungicide, insecticide, and/or miticide if they require them. In the fall, we apply a slow-release fertilizer that feeds your plants for up to 6 months. We will continue monitoring for diseases and make necessary adjustments if needed.
  • Round 6: Our technicians will apply a dormant oil to control a variety of insects and fungi to keep your plants safe and healthy.
  • Round 7: We apply a Winter Guard anti-desiccant that will keep your plants safe for the winter in the dormant phase so they can flourish in the next upcoming year.

Frequently Asked Questions: Plant Health Care Edition

What kinds of pests and diseases does plant health care actually treat?

NuLeaf's plant health care program targets common Northern Virginia ornamental problems, such as bagworms, lace bugs, and scale insects, as well as fungal issues like powdery mildew that affect trees and shrubs. Different plant species are vulnerable to different pests, which is why the program is built around monitoring a property's specific mix of trees and shrubs rather than treating for one generic problem. Left unaddressed, several of these issues can weaken or kill an otherwise healthy tree or shrub over a few seasons. Identifying which pests or diseases are present is part of the initial diagnostic evaluation.

How is plant health care different from a regular lawn care program?

Plant health care treats the trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants on a property, while lawn care treats the turf itself, and the two use different products, timing, and diagnostic approaches. A lawn can be thick and healthy while nearby shrubs or trees are under separate pest or disease pressure that a turf-focused program wouldn't catch or address. Properties with mature landscaping typically need both services running side by side rather than one covering the other. This is why plant health care is offered as a separate program rather than bundled with standard lawn treatments.

When during the year should plant health care treatments start?

Plant health care begins in late winter with a horticultural oil application targeting overwintering insects and their eggs before they become active in spring. Starting this early gives the rest of NuLeaf's 7-visit program, including spring fertilization and targeted fungicide or insecticide applications, a head start on pests and disease before new growth appears. Waiting until problems are visible in summer means treating an active infestation instead of preventing one. This is why the program is structured around the full year rather than a single spring visit.

Is it safe to treat plants near a vegetable garden or fruit trees

Treating ornamental plants near a vegetable garden or fruit trees is generally safe when technicians know the edible plants are present, since NuLeaf's reduced-risk, organic-based products are specifically designed to minimize impact on surrounding plants, people, and pollinators. Product choice and timing can both be adjusted around edible plants for extra safety. Homeowners should point out any vegetable gardens, fruit trees, or berry patches before the first visit, so this gets factored into the plan. This kind of property-specific detail is part of why each yard gets an individual plan rather than one blanket schedule.

How will I know if plant health care treatments are working?

Working treatments show up as fuller foliage, better color, and fewer visible pest or disease symptoms over a season, not immediately after a single visit. Because the program builds soil health at the root level in addition to treating surface symptoms, improvement tends to appear gradually. A plant that was already stressed or diseased before starting service may take a full growing season to show its strongest recovery. Technicians track plant condition at each visit specifically to monitor this progress and adjust the plan if something isn't responding.

Thanks to Daryl's continuous outstanding efforts and expertise, my lawn is the best in the neighborhood. On three separate occasions, neighborhood walkers have asked me how my lawn looks so good? I point to the NuLeaf sign. I've also had nice conversations with Daryl so I'm comfortable with him taking care of my lawn.

Very polite and professional. Arrived on time, worked quickly, and left us a reminder to keep the dogs off the treated areas for 2 hours.
